UV Water Treatment in Richardson
A UV system adds a final disinfection step where water enters your home, using light instead of chemicals. We size it to your flow, fit it with a proper prefilter, protect the floors while we work and leave the space cleaner than we found it.
What UV Treatment Does, and What It Does Not
A UV system is a stainless steel chamber with a lamp sealed inside a quartz sleeve. As water flows past, ultraviolet light disrupts the genetic material of bacteria, viruses and cysts so they cannot reproduce. Nothing is added to the water, and its taste and smell stay the same.
UV does not remove anything. Chlorine, lead, sediment and minerals pass straight through. That is why we usually pair it with whole-home filtration or reverse osmosis, and why a sediment prefilter comes first: cloudy water shades the lamp and lets microbes slip by.
City water is already treated before it reaches you, so for most homes UV is a second barrier rather than a necessity. We will tell you plainly whether it earns its place in your home.
What Comes With a UV Installation
- Sizing to your flow rate
- We match the chamber to the gallons per minute your home actually draws with several fixtures running. An undersized unit lets water pass too quickly for a full dose.
- Sediment prefilter
- A fine sediment cartridge ahead of the chamber keeps the quartz sleeve clear and the light reaching every drop.
- Bypass valves
- We plumb a bypass so the lamp and sleeve can be serviced later without shutting off water to the whole house.
- Controller with lamp alert
- The controller sounds an alert if the bulb stops working or has used up its rated hours. A glance at the display tells you whether your water is being treated.
- Sanitizing the lines
- After the system is running we flush and sanitize the plumbing downstream, so the first water through your taps starts clean.
- A finished, tidy install
- Neat pipe runs, secured mounting, labeled valves and a cleared work area. Packaging and old fittings leave with us.
When UV Is Worth Considering
Someone vulnerable lives with you
A newborn, an older parent or a family member with a weakened immune system can be a good reason for an extra layer of protection at the tap.
You are adding carbon filtration
Whole-home carbon removes the chlorine that keeps city water disinfected through your pipes. A UV chamber after the filter restores a disinfection step at the point of entry.
Boil-water notices worry you
UV adds a barrier during disruptions in the supply system. It does not replace following an official notice, and we will say so.
An older UV unit has gone quiet
If the alarm was silenced or the lamp has not been changed in years, the system may be giving no protection at all.
Cloudy water or slimy fixtures
Persistent cloudiness or biofilm in aerators deserves a look. Our water test helps tell us whether UV, filtration or both make sense.
What Shapes the Price of UV Treatment
A UV system itself is fairly simple, so most of the cost difference comes from what surrounds it. We price after the water test and a look at your plumbing, and the quote lists each part separately.
Flow rate and home size
Larger homes with more bathrooms need a higher-rated chamber and lamp.
Prefiltration needs
Clear water may need only a sediment cartridge. Water with iron or hardness may call for treatment upstream first.
Location and access
A garage wall with open pipe is quicker than a tight closet or a line that needs rerouting.
Power at the mounting spot
The unit runs on a standard outlet. If none is close, that work is added to the quote.
Pairing with other equipment
Installing UV alongside whole-home filtration or a water softener in one visit shares labor and keeps the equipment in a single tidy row.
How the Work Goes
- 1
Phone call and water test
We start with a water test that checks clarity, iron and hardness, since each affects how well UV light passes through. You get the results explained in plain terms.
- 2
A written quote
We note the equipment, the prefilter, where it will mount and any plumbing changes. If an outlet is needed near the main line, you will know before the day.
- 3
Installation day
We lay drop cloths along our path and under the work area, shut off the water and install the bypass, prefilter and chamber. The chamber is mounted level on sturdy brackets, with the controller placed where its indicator is easy to see.
- 4
Sanitize, test and tidy
We flush and sanitize the lines, confirm the lamp and alarm work, then vacuum, wipe down and carry out every scrap. Before we leave, we show you how the controller and bypass operate.

UV Treatment Questions
Does UV affect the flavor of my water?
It doesn't. The light passes through the water without leaving anything behind or taking anything out, so the flavor and smell you have now stay as they are. If chlorine taste bothers you, whole-home filtration is the fix, and it works well alongside UV.
Does UV remove lead or chlorine?
It does not. UV only neutralizes microorganisms. For lead from older plumbing or trace contaminants at the kitchen tap, reverse osmosis is the better tool.
How often does the lamp need changing?
Most lamps are rated for about a year of continuous use, and output fades before the bulb looks dim. The sleeve should be cleaned at the same visit, and the sediment cartridge changed on its own schedule.
What happens if the power goes out?
Water still flows, but it is not being treated while the lamp is off. When power returns the lamp warms up quickly, and the controller shows that it is running again.
Can you add UV to a system I already have?
Usually, yes. UV mounts after your filter or softener on the main line, so we check the space, the plumbing and power nearby and plan around what is already there.
How much disruption should I expect?
Your main supply stays shut while we cut in the bypass and chamber, which is usually a short stretch of the visit. We give you a heads-up before the valve closes and let you know the moment the taps are running again. Drop cloths cover the floor from the door to the work area, and we vacuum and wipe everything down before leaving.
Find Out Whether UV Belongs in Your Home
A water test tells us whether UV adds real value or whether filtration alone covers it. We serve Richardson and nearby towns such as Plano, Garland and Allen.
